Tookie's One Step Closer

Judge signs death warrant for Crips gang co-founder

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A judge signed a death warrant Monday for Stanley "Tookie" Williams, a co-founder of the notorious Crips gang who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his children's books.

Williams is scheduled to die December 13 at San Quentin prison. The judge rejected requests by his attorneys to delay the execution until December 22 to give them more time to seek clemency from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

If anyone involved in the Gangsta life ever tried to change his ways, it's Tookie. Yes, he helped start one of the most notorious gangs on the planet, but he also came to genuinely regret what he'd done, and has spent the rest of his life trying to put things to right.

I understand that for a lot of people, it's too little too late. But the execution of Tookie Williams will send one clear message: it doesn't matter how sorry you are, or how much you've changed, or how hard you work to make amends--America will not forgive. That message will be heard by all the people struggling to get out of gangs, and they'll ask themselve--what's the point? Why should I even try to leave the life?

Very good points. The mere cost of putting an inmate to death should be a deterring factor. I'm not talking about the 10.00 worth of electricity or the 15.00 worth of euthanasia drugs, I'm talking the millions of dollars spent during their appeal process. Millions verses 20,000 a year to keep them behind bars. Remember the sign in Bill Clinton's war room? It's the economy stupid. Well, it is the economy here. After all we're paying for wars, hurricanes and now looks like bird flu too. Steve
