El Salvador Tries Getting Tough on Youth Gangs

San Salvador, Apr 18 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador“s Assistant Police Chief Pedro Gonzales announced the beginning of Operation Super Iron Hand, wherein thousands of police comprise anti-gang groups (GTA) to patrol streets in the 21 cities with most crime.

Gonzales said the plan is to slow down the rising tide of crime in residential zones.

However representatives from the principal opposition party, FMLN, said this is simply relocating police into high-risk zones without taking other measures or strengthening the police force, and will thus leave other areas less protected.

The Faribundo Marti National Liberation Front representatives pointed out these measures have been tried in the past without success, although the plan has been a publicity propaganda success.

The FMLN sources said that the real genius of the plan is its public relations, to the point where the public already believes Super Iron Hand is a triumph, although crime increases; that is, the operation was a success but the patient died.
