Gangs Online, Police Log On

Police In Charlotte Take Fight Against Gangs Online

Charlotte -- Officer Steve Parker works in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police's Gang Unit. He now spends some of his time patrolling the Internet. Parker says he has seen links online between Charlotte's street gangs and their idols in bigger cities. "I've actually arrested people with website pages on [them], in their school bags." He says the gang affiliation doesn't matter. "Pick what you want. You want info on Crips and Bloods, it's all here," he said as he showed us different websites.

Reverend Roderick Ewell moved to Charlotte from Los Angeles. While there, he helped broker a truce between two of LA's biggest gangs. He says parents need to start policing their home computers now. "Most gang members here in Charlotte are a bunch of wanna-be's. We need to deal with the wanna-be's now, because that's when they're the most dangerous. [They are] trying to prove themselves."
